Barcelona club president Joan Laporta expected 2022 to be "very thorny and full of emotions", but promised that everyone would work to improve the club's financial situation and that it would return to be a "symbol of world sport".
In a message published by the club, he admitted that 2021 witnessed many "ups and downs", but it marked the "beginning of a new phase".
He said: "The year 2022 will be very difficult and full of emotions. We continue to work to improve the financial situation of the club, as well as for Barca to return as a sporting icon in the world and for our foundation to continue to help people in need."
And he concluded: "We will do this while emphasizing our responsibility to restore the smile to the Barcelona fans."
Barcelona legend Lionel Messi left this year to Paris Saint-Germain, after the end of his contract, and the team - ranked seventh in the Spanish League - was bid farewell to the European Champions League from the group stage to head towards the Europa League.
