Biden: Trump "created and spread a web of lies" that led to riots at the Capitol on January 6
"We have to be very clear about what is true and what is a lie," Biden said. “A former president of the United States of America created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. He did so because he values strength over principle, because he sees his own interest more important than the interest of his country and those of America.”
"He cannot accept his loss," Biden continued.
Biden delved into the various lies spread by Trump and his allies about the 2020 election, stating that they were never able to provide any evidence for their claims, and portraying Trump as a president he feared losing.
"Even before the first ballot was cast, the former president was proactively raising doubts about the election results," Biden said. "He's not just an ex-president. He's a defeated ex-president."
Biden, who has repeatedly said that January 6 was one of the darkest days in US history, asked listeners to close their eyes as he recounted the day's violent events — from attacks against police shows to death threats against the vice president and speaker. The White House - All while Trump was watching TV from the White House.
"They were not looking to support the will of the people, they were looking to deny the will of the people," Biden said of the rioters. They were looking to undermine the constitution.”
Biden has been reluctant throughout his presidency to criticize Trump by name even as his predecessor and other Republicans continue to tell lies about the veracity of the 2020 election results.
Before Biden's speech, Psaki said he was "clear in his eyes about the threat the former president poses to our democracy and how the former president was.
