The woman who was cared for by Ghislaine Maxwell and who provided key evidence in the sex trafficking trial hopes the verdict will bring "solace" to other survivors.

"I am relieved and very grateful," said Annie Farmer, the only witness who used her real name during her testimony.

"I hope this ruling will show... that no one is above the law."

Maxwell was found guilty of supplying underage girls to abuse by Jeffrey Epstein. Her lawyers say they will appeal the ruling.

The 60-year-old was convicted on five of the six counts she faced, including the most serious charge - that of sex-trafficking a minor.

The verdict, reached after five full days of deliberation by a 12-person jury in New York, means the British social activist could spend the rest of her life behind bars.

"I hope this ruling will bring solace to everyone who needs it," Farmer said. "Even those with great power and privilege will be held accountable when they sexually abuse and exploit youth."

A lawyer representing a victim who used Jane's name as a pseudonym to protect her identity thanked the jury for recognizing Maxwell's "critical role in helping" Epstein, and paid tribute to the victims who shared their experiences.

"Strong women who survived the abuse of Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein could sleep better tonight knowing the justice system did it right," said Robert Glassman.

Gloria Allred, another lawyer representing a number of Epstein's accusers, told the BBC that the result sent a "message to other sex offenders" who take advantage of vulnerable young women.

"You may be charged, you may be prosecuted and you may end up being sentenced to prison for the rest of your life," she said.

One of Maxwell and Epstein's most prominent accusers, Virginia Joffrey, said she "will always remember this day."

"Having lived through the horrors of Maxwell's abuse, my heart goes out to the many other girls and young women who have suffered at her hands and ruined their lives," she said.

Geoffrey has also previously claimed that she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew three times. The Duke of York denies the allegations.

Wednesday's ruling follows a month-long trial that included testimony from four women who described being abused by Epstein between 1994 and 2004.

Maxwell showed no visible sign of emotion as the verdict was read out on Wednesday, just pouring a glass of water herself and sipting it twice.

A date has not yet been set for her sentencing.

Maxwell, the long-time partner of the convicted pedophile Epstein, has been in prison since July 2020 when she was accused of involvement in the financier's abuse of teenage girls. Some of the victims were as young as 14 years old.

Epstein committed suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking.

Maxwell, one of the most prominent social figures, is the youngest daughter of famous businessman Robert Maxwell who died in 1991.

Shortly after her father's death, Maxwell left the United Kingdom to settle in America where she worked in real estate and eventually met Epstein.

The couple's romantic relationship reportedly only lasted a few years, but she continued working with him long after and is said to have introduced Epstein to wealthy and powerful personalities including Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew.

During the trial, Maxwell's lawyers repeatedly argued that she was the scapegoat for Epstein's crimes. Meanwhile, prosecutors sought to link the duo to "partners in crime" who run a "pyramid scheme for abuse".

Prosecutors cited bank records showing she received $30m (£22m) from Epstein between 1999 and 2007 as evidence that she was paid for by money.

All of the women who testified said they had been sexually assaulted by Epstein before they turned 18, and that Maxwell had urged, facilitated and even participated in sexual encounters.
